Reasons why LED curing lights are superior to halogen curing lights in dentistry

Dental curing lights, as oral devices for repairing teeth, work by using photopolymerization technology. Specific wavelengths of light rapidly cure dental restorative resin materials, filling cavities or bonding brackets. This special light requirement is precisely what curing lights provide. As the name suggests, a curing light is a specialized device that provides the necessary light for photopolymerization materials to solidify.

Advantages of LED Light Sources

Currently, LED curing lights dominate the market. This is because the wavelengths of light emitted by LEDs are mainly concentrated between 420-480nm, which matches the sensitive wavelengths of photopolymerization resin. It converts over 90% of energy into pure blue light energy, effectively reducing heat generation.

 

Defects of Halogen Bulbs

In contrast, halogen bulbs have a wider spectrum, with only 0.7% of blue light energy being effectively utilized. The remaining colorful light is converted into heat energy, resulting in local high temperatures, which may cause the cured resin to detach. Therefore, LED curing lights have become dominant in the market.
