Many people ask what a high-speed handpiece is. A high-speed handpiece, also known as a high-speed air turbine handpiece, is a commonly used instrument in dental treatment, with a rotational speed of 350,000 to 400,000 rpm. High-speed handpieces play an important role in dental treatment, and are used in many clinical situations, such as cavity preparation for fillings, wisdom tooth sectioning, etc., all of which require the use of a high-speed handpiece. It is not only more convenient to use, but also has no impact on disinfection after treatment. There is no need to worry about high-temperature sterilization damaging the LED light, and the quick-connect fitting allows for quick connection of the handpiece for treatment, unlike the time-consuming and laborious screwing required by traditional methods.

When using a regular high-speed handpiece, it rotates, sprays water, and vents air simultaneously. The air and water flow in the same direction, so it usually produces a water mist with a large coverage area. This strong airflow and large-area mist effectively cools the bur and tooth during cavity preparation and pulp exposure. However, during tooth extraction, it can easily cause subcutaneous emphysema in the patient, and the strong airflow can easily carry debris into the deeper tissues. Therefore, when removing impacted teeth, we usually use a 45-degree angled handpiece, also called an angled handpiece or reverse-angle handpiece, to section the tooth.

Handpieces also come in large, medium (standard), mini (pediatric), and 45-degree angled versions. The appropriate size is selected based on the treatment. For example, pediatric patients require mini handpieces because their mouths are small, and even with mouth props, operation can be difficult.

In short, there are many types of handpieces, but quietness and durability are important criteria. Many inexpensive high-speed handpieces on the market attract attention with low prices, but their quality varies, and many break down after a short period of use, requiring repairs, which greatly affects efficiency.
